Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Bounce

We open by working the joints mobile and settling into the bounce, the springy weight in the knees that carries every street style before any of the technical stuff begins.

10–25 mins

Foundation Drills

Each week trains one discipline in depth — perhaps breaking top rock and footwork, perhaps the hits and waves of popping, perhaps the points and locks of locking — chopped down move by move until the foundation feels reliable.

25–40 mins

Combos & Formations

Now the drills join up into compact routines, you meet your first beginner freezes, and the room practises arriving on the same count together — the raw material of a crew.

40–50 mins

Freestyle Lab

Playful freestyle exercises put you face to face with the beat, prompting quick decisions and helping you trust them, until moving without a set count stops feeling daunting.

50–60 mins

Cypher & Cool-Down

We close with an open circle for anyone who wants a turn, the rest clapping it on, and wind down with a proper stretch.

About Street Dance Classes in Nottingham

Street dance gathers up the styles that were born outside the studio — out on the pavement, in the car park, at the late-night jam — and breaking, popping and locking sit right at its centre. Across our weekly street dance classes in Nottingham, those roots stay in the spotlight: we drill the true mechanics of each, from breaking's footwork and freezes to popping's hits and waves to locking's clean points. Then the work turns outward into choreography, crew formations and routines you can perform — dance you assemble and make your own, not a chart number copied step for step.

As a city stacked with students from the University of Nottingham and NTU, Nottingham keeps a buzzing jam scene and the occasional workshop going, but a steady adult class teaching the whole range of street styles has long been missing. We hold ours at a Nottingham city-centre studio, minutes from Old Market Square and the Lace Market, on the wide, level floor that footwork, floorwork and crew lines really call for. Regulars travel in from all over — Beeston, West Bridgford, Long Eaton, even Derby and Mansfield — and each style is delivered with care for its history while staying genuinely open to first-timers.

No previous training and no existing crew are needed to walk in — the bounce is the starting line for everybody, and the cypher is there whenever you decide to try it. Wear something relaxed that copes with hitting the floor, plus flat trainers with a soft sole. What Street Dance Gives You

The Real Foundations

We hand you the genuine article instead of a diluted copy — the origins of breaking, popping and locking and the proper way the moves are layered. Once the reasoning clicks, picking up the technique speeds right up.

Choreography You Shape

The real reward in street dance is improvising on the spot. We train you to listen to the track and commit to your own choices, so you head home able to invent and arrange movement with no routine propping you up.

A Workout in Disguise

Relentless footwork, held freezes and quick transitions push your legs, core and lungs hard — yet the hour feels like play, not a gym session you have to survive.

Crew & Circle Energy

Standing in the circle and holding a line in a formation swaps fear for confidence. Good-natured battles, group routines you nail as one and a roomful of people cheering each turn grow the courage to perform — and you gain a crew that backs you up.

Your Street Dance Journey

From that very first bounce to keeping your place in a crew line — this is roughly how it tends to unfold.

Week 1–4

Finding the Bounce

Getting Started

Discovering the bounce, the top rock of breaking, a few early popping hits and a first lock. Waking the body up and growing comfortable moving with weight, attitude and a touch of swagger.

What to Wear

Relaxed gear that copes with going low — joggers, a tee, a hoodie. Soft, flat-soled trainers. Dress to move freely and dress in whatever feels like you.

Month 2–3

Building Vocabulary

Style Foundations

Digging into breaking footwork, popping waves and locking runs, absorbing the backstory of each and noticing which one your body takes to.

First Formations

Joining the foundations into compact routines and practising landing the same shapes on the same count as everyone else — your earliest go at choreography and crew work.

Month 4–6

Finding Your Flavour

Your Own Style

Diving into the style that grabbed you — extended freestyles, tougher combos and freezes, and blending the foundations into movement that is plainly your own.

The Circle

At home in the cypher, switched on to the room and starting to reveal real personality. By this point street dance is a scene you belong to, not just a lesson on the timetable.

Month 6+

The Street Dancer

Sharper Skills

Freestyling assuredly across more than one style, up for swapping rounds in a battle and inventing combos with the inventiveness this scene prizes.

What Comes Next

Put it to the test at a Nottingham jam or battle, specialise in one discipline, or add our hip-hop class for wider cultural grounding and a different set of grooves.

Street Dance FAQ

The things people most often check with us while they are mulling over a first session.

Can I start street dance with no dance background at all? +

Easily. Breaking, popping and locking all grow out of one relaxed bounce and a bit of groove, and that is precisely where a newcomer plants their feet. We break every move down to its bones and rebuild it at a gentle pace, locking in the base before anything trickier lands on top, so a first-week beginner and a regular can train side by side in Nottingham without anyone feeling out of their depth.

Is street dance the same thing as a commercial or hip-hop class? +

Commercial dance is made for stage and camera — glossy routines set to chart hits — and a hip-hop class sits in groove, party steps and freestyle. Street dance is the rawer end of things: breaking, popping and locking, the freezes and isolations, and the routines and formations a crew builds out of them. What we are after is crisp movement that holds up in performance and snaps together in unison, rather than a re-creation of a music video.

Which street dance styles will the class actually teach? +

We cycle through the pillars — the top rock and footwork of breaking, the hits and waves of popping, and the snappy points of locking. Over the weeks you taste each one, gather the freezes and transitions that knit them together, and start shaping them into compact routines to perform alongside everyone else in the room.

What do street dance classes in Nottingham cost? +

A single drop-in is £10, with no forms and no joining fee. Want to plan a few weeks ahead? A four-week block is £32, which works out at £8 a session. There is no membership and no contract behind it — simply show up on the weeks the timetable happens to suit you.

Where in Nottingham do the street dance classes take place? +

Our weekly regulars gather at our studio in Nottingham city centre, moments from Old Market Square and the Left Lion and an easy reach of the Lace Market and Hockley. With the NET tram and the train station both nearby, dropping in from Beeston, West Bridgford or Long Eaton is straightforward, and we will open more spaces across the city as numbers grow. Ask and we will steer you to the right session.

What kit and footwear should I bring? +

Wear things you can bend, drop and throw shapes in — joggers or trackies, a tee or hoodie, nothing that restricts the arms. Flat trainers with a little padding and a flexible sole keep their grip through footwork and spare your knees on the drops. Personal style is half the point, so come dressed however you like.

Am I going to be forced to battle or perform for an audience? +

Cyphers and battles belong to street culture, so each session leaves room for them — the cypher being the circle dancers make to take turns, the battle a friendly exchange within it. Once crews settle we also choreograph short pieces for groups to show. Whether you step forward is always up to you, though; plenty of people spend a while watching, clapping and learning the formation before their first go.

Does the class include breaking, the b-boy and b-girl side? +

It does — breaking foundations thread through every session. We work top rock, the six-step and other footwork, getting you comfortable sinking to the floor and springing back, plus freezes pitched at beginners. Strength and control are built up over weeks, so the powermoves filling your feed get a sensible run-up rather than a bruising cold start.

Are private or crew street dance sessions an option? +

Definitely. We can lay on one-to-one coaching or small crew sessions to sharpen a single style, assemble a routine or get a group stage-ready for a showcase, battle or event. Tell us what you are working towards and we will shape the sessions to match.

What music gets played in a street dance class? +

It hangs on whatever style we are drilling that night. Locking moves to funk, popping feeds off electro and synth-funk, and breaking rides chopped breakbeats, with hip-hop and the odd crossover record scattered through. The knack is reading the drum and the accent instead of the melody — manage that and every track shifts under your feet.
