Class Structure
Beginners Class — 60 Minutes
Warm-Up & Hip Sway
We open by freeing the hips, ribs and shoulders with a handful of slow isolations, then lock the body onto the patient four-count beat that sits at the heart of bachata.
Basics & Turns
The side-to-side basic with its tap on four, simple steps that carry you back and forth, plus an opening pair of inside and outside turns — rehearsed on both sides of the partnership.
Close Hold & Connection
Building a relaxed, listening frame, offering and picking up the lead through the body, and learning to glide as a pair while the whole room keeps changing partners.
Body Rolls & Linking
Linking turns, body rolls and footwork into compact phrases that drift along, with an early hint of the sensual styling that makes bachata feel so fluid.
Social Dancing & Stretch
Free dancing to complete tracks, swapping partners as you go to cement the session, before a calm stretch sees everyone out.
About Bachata Dance Classes in Nottingham
Of every Latin partner dance, bachata is the tender, romantic one — a sensual style that grew up in the Dominican Republic and turns on an unhurried four-count side step finishing with a hip-led tap. Across our weekly bachata classes in Nottingham you cover both the Dominican and the sensual schools, working through footwork, close-hold connection, turn patterns, body rolls and the gentle musicality that lets you pour yourself into the guitar instead of chasing numbers. Because the partner in front of you keeps changing throughout the lesson, you grow the supple, reactive feel that a crowded bachata social asks for.
The city is no stranger to Latin nights, and between the University of Nottingham and NTU it is packed with students, yet a dependable weekly bachata class for adult beginners and improvers has long been missing. We hold ours at our studio in Nottingham city centre, minutes on foot from Old Market Square and the Left Lion and within reach of the Lace Market, Hockley and the Castle, welcoming dancers from all over town and in from Beeston, West Bridgford, Long Eaton and as far afield as Derby and Mansfield. Hop off the NET tram in the middle of it all and everything you learn that evening is shaped to carry straight out onto the social scene.
No partner is required, and not one day of dance history is expected either. The room moves on to a fresh partner every few minutes so nobody sits out the hold, and although a slick-soled shoe eases the spins, anything comfortable will carry you through a first night. Look across all 20 of our dance classes in Nottingham, or round up everyone for a one-off salsa hen party.

What Bachata Gives You
Turn Up Solo
Partners rotate the whole way through the hour, so there is never anyone you must bring. Arrive on your own, with a mate or in a group — you will dance the entire room and head off having met a handful of new people.
Connection You Can Feel
Since the lead travels quietly through the frame and the body, you learn to listen, reply and move in step with somebody else — a closeness and trust that hardly any other dance demands of you.
A Dance That Travels
You will find a bachata floor in just about every city you visit. Lay the foundations with us and you can drop into the dancing almost anywhere — a Latin night nearby or a sun-drenched social abroad.
Feel the Guitar
The entire genre leans on that aching lead guitar and a quiet, steady percussion below it. Tune your ear into those layers and your footwork shifts from a memorised list of steps into a genuine reply to the melody.
Your Bachata Dance Journey
From your very first close-hold basic to moving as one with a partner when a bachata track takes over the room — this is roughly how it goes.
The Side Step
Getting Started
The side basic you will lean on, that tap on the fourth beat, a couple of travelling steps and one tidy right turn to begin. We focus on hearing where the pulse falls, hitting the accent and getting comfortable in a hold as the two of you trade weight.
What to Bring
Wear something comfortable you can sway and turn in, and choose a sole that slides — dance shoes, smooth soles or even socks are all fine. Park any deep-tread trainers so the ball of your foot can pivot instead of gripping when a turn comes.
Adding Movement
Developing Technique
Inside and outside turns, hand changes and a first set of soft body rolls begin to broaden what you can do, and dancing each role in turn deepens your read on how lead and follow answer one another.
Partner Skills
You settle in with whoever the rotation hands you, and it dawns on you that a clear lead lives in a calm frame and matched timing, never in muscle.
Out Dancing
Flowing Combinations
Weaving your turns, rolls and footwork into extended phrases that ride along with the track. Bringing in close-hold styling, an easy roll through the hip and the first signs of a character all your own.
Social Nights
Set for a first real bachata night — confident enough to ask for a dance and unflustered when a busy floor closes in around you.
The Bachatero
Advanced Patterns
Longer sequences, sensual waves, dips and shadow-position work, every bit of it danced to the song — hitting the breaks, riding the romantic swells and making something that is your own.
What Comes Next
Add salsa or tango for a different style of partnering, treat yourself to a bachata festival or congress, or chase the rapid Dominican footwork down a fully traditional route.
Bachata Dance FAQ
The things people most like to check with us before they first step onto the bachata floor.
Can I pick up bachata if I have never danced a step? +
You certainly can — among the partner dances, bachata is one of the kindest to begin with. It all hangs off a repeating one-two-three-tap, and the second your feet trust that little loop everything else falls into place around it. Every level is welcome in our Nottingham classes, where each move is broken down patiently, so a first-timer is usually swaying along before their opening evening is over.
Do I have to bring a partner to your Nottingham bachata classes? +
Not in the slightest. The floor swaps partners every few minutes, so over the hour you take both the lead and the follow with plenty of different people. Most of our weekly regulars walk in alone, and anyone new is always looked after.
What kind of shoes work best for bachata? +
Choose a sole that slides so the foot can swivel cleanly beneath you. Suede-soled dance shoes are the dream, leather soles spin nicely as well, and a clean pair of socks does the job for a first try. Keep the chunky grippy trainers in the cupboard, since they catch the floor mid-turn and can wrench a knee.
What is the price of a bachata class in Nottingham? +
One drop-in costs £10, with no joining fee and no paperwork. After something steadier? Four weeks together come to £32, dropping each class to £8. No membership, no contract — simply come along whenever the timetable suits your week.
Where in Nottingham do the bachata classes take place? +
Our weekly regulars gather at our studio in Nottingham city centre, a short walk from Old Market Square and the Left Lion and handy for the Lace Market and Hockley. With the NET tram and the railway station both nearby, it is an easy run in from Beeston, West Bridgford and further out. Ask us and we will steer you to the right session.
How do Dominican and sensual bachata differ? +
Dominican bachata is where it all began on the island — grounded, cheeky and footwork-first, with a springy lift and quick syncopated taps. Sensual bachata is the newer European offshoot, built around body waves, rolls, dips and a tighter hold guided from the torso. We cover the pair of them, so you stay at ease whatever the floor around you happens to be dancing.
I can never find the beat — could I still learn bachata? +
You honestly could, and bachata is a kind place to find your timing. With an even pulse and such a short count, it is easy to grab hold of. We count it out loud, drum the fourth-beat tap together and grow the basic step from there, and after a handful of weeks the timing turns up by itself and no longer feels like a guessing game.
Which songs and artists fill the bachata classes? +
A broad spread of the genre — vintage Dominican bachata with its glassy guitar, romantic chart hits from the likes of Romeo Santos, Prince Royce and Aventura, and the sensual reworks of pop tunes that crowd the socials now. The day your ear separates the guitar, the bongo and the güira from the melody, every song starts to feel new.
Will a bachata class give me a decent workout? +
Far more than you would think. The endless footwork, hip sway and turning keep you softly active for the entire hour, and it hardly ever feels like a workout. A class quietly firms up your posture, balance and core while the music keeps you too absorbed to notice.
Do you run private one-to-one bachata lessons in Nottingham? +
We do indeed. One-to-one bachata coaching is easy to set up on request, whether for one dancer or a couple — ideal for tightening your lead and follow, your body movement or a particular song. Send us a message and we will tailor the lessons to whatever you want to achieve.
