Working through jazz squares, pas de bourrée, fan kicks and the head-spotting behind a tidy pirouette — rehearsed unhurriedly so the vocabulary really beds in.

A short number with a Broadway tilt, set to a lively showtune — crisp, dripping with character and rounded off with a burst of jazz hands.

About Jazz Dance Classes in Nottingham

Jazz is dance with the houselights down and the spotlight up — a bold, theatrical style that ties Broadway and commercial jazz together with high kicks, pirouettes, crisp isolations and travelling leaps. Our weekly jazz classes in Nottingham teach the technique that props up the stage and the music video in equal measure, growing from neat fundamentals towards short routines that ask for honest pizzazz and a performer's spark. Wherever you start from, you walk out of each class having moved hard, performed properly and grinned the whole way through.

Nottingham is a born performance city — two universities feeding a huge student crowd, the Theatre Royal and a packed live scene — yet a dependable weekly jazz class aimed plainly at adult beginners and improvers has been a frustrating gap to fill. We are setting things in motion at our studio in Nottingham city centre, a short stroll from Old Market Square and the Lace Market, gathering dancers from across town and in from Beeston, West Bridgford, Long Eaton and as far afield as Derby and Mansfield. With more venues on the cards, a class within reach may be nearer than you expect.

No experience and no flexibility are needed to make a start — your teacher takes each combination apart and stacks it back up slowly, so jazz hands and leaps feel within grasp from the very first week. Pull on something fitted with jazz shoes, grippy socks or bare feet, and tie your hair back before the spinning begins. Have a wander through all 20 of our dance classes in Nottingham, or round up the group for a high-octane musicals hen party.

What Jazz Gives You

Showtime Energy

Every routine is made to be performed, not merely remembered. Facials, attack and stage presence are drilled right beside the footwork, until projecting to a room comes without a second thought.

Kicks, Turns and Leaps

Towering kicks, whipping pirouettes and leaps that devour the floor are where jazz really thrills. We assemble each one carefully from the ground up until it feels powerful, tidy and entirely yours to command.

A Technical Springboard

Jazz isolations, lines and timing underpin commercial, musical theatre and contemporary alike, so the graft you put in here feeds straight into every other class you take.

A Joyful Workout

All that kicking and leaping keeps your pulse high, while the isolations and balances sneak in a quiet dose of core work — a top-to-toe session that somehow never feels like exercise.

Your Jazz Dance Journey

From a wobbly first jazz square to belting out a whole routine with genuine showtime swagger — this is the path it tends to follow.

Week 1–4

Jazz Foundations

Getting Started

We open with the building blocks — jazz square, ball change, chassé, pas de bourrée — plus drills that coax the hips, ribs and shoulders into moving on their own. Easy quarter-turns and those first jazz walks start carrying you around the room.

What to Bring

Anything close-fitting you can stretch in, finished off with jazz shoes, grippy socks or just bare feet. Fasten long hair securely so nothing whips across your face as you spin.

Month 2–3

Sharpening Up

Developing Technique

In come the single pirouette, the fan kick, controlled battements and the take-off behind your first proper leap. You also start shading the movement, balancing biting, crisp accents against smooth, drawn-out lines.

Routines

Short numbers choreographed to bright showtunes and chart pop land on the timetable, and the aim shifts from remembering the shapes to selling them with character.

Month 4–6

Finding Your Pizzazz

Bigger Moves

Everything scales up — double pirouettes, calypso and stag leaps, rapid turning runs and a little floor work, all knitted into longer routines that pivot on a sixpence.

Performance Quality

On go the facials, the gestures and a clear sense of intention, alongside the knack of pushing your energy to the furthest seat so the routine truly reads as a performance.

Month 6+

The Performer

Stage-Ready Jazz

Settled in your kicks, turns and leaps, and able to glide between smoky Fosse, beaming Broadway and modern commercial jazz without ever dropping the showtime spark.

What Comes Next

Pair it with ballet for cleaner line, contemporary for free expression or commercial for a current edge — jazz laces through the lot of them.

Jazz Dance FAQ

The questions first-timers most often raise with us before they give a jazz class a go.

Can I start jazz with no dance background at all? +

Yes, and total newcomers are who the weekly class is shaped for. We pull every kick, isolation and turn apart at a gentle tempo, drill it until it feels familiar, then thread it into a short routine. The tempo is pitched for adult bodies, and we never assume any training has come before.

How does jazz differ from street or commercial dance? +

Jazz keeps a foot on the stage. It marries theatre showmanship to clean isolations, high kicks, leaps and pirouettes, the whole thing delivered with deliberate attack and pizzazz. Street and commercial owe a huge debt to jazz, but jazz puts the lines, the spotlight and the storytelling first.

What kind of clothing and kit does jazz call for? +

Go for figure-skimming gear that keeps your shapes easy to read — leggings or joggers and a fitted top. Jazz shoes are the natural pick, though grippy socks or bare feet will see you through early on. Clip long hair out of the way before the turns, and bring water, because the kicks and leaps warm you up quickly.

What do jazz classes in Nottingham cost? +

One drop-in lands at £10, with no joining fee and nothing to put your name to. Prefer to commit? A four-week block is £32, which brings each class down to £8. We run no membership and no contract, so you simply turn up whenever the timetable lines up with your week.

Where in Nottingham are the jazz classes held? +

The weekly sessions launch at our studio in Nottingham city centre, a short walk from Old Market Square and the Left Lion and handy for the Lace Market and Hockley. With the NET tram and the station nearby, it is an easy run in from Beeston and West Bridgford. More venues are coming, so ask if you would like one nearer home.

Must I already be flexible to take up jazz? +

Not one bit. The warm-up and technique work gradually free the hips, hamstrings and shoulders, so the high kicks and extensions turn up as you keep practising. You begin within the range you have today and watch it open out week on week, rather than arriving able to drop into the splits.

What music gets played during a jazz class? +

A wide spread of bright, theatrical sound — swing from the big bands, numbers pulled out of the shows, funk and whatever happens to be riding high in the charts. Whatever the routine is reaching for steers the playlist, from cool, slinky Fosse to a dazzling, kick-stuffed Broadway closer topped with jazz hands.

Will jazz help me with auditions or performing? +

It will. Casting panels want clean pirouettes, controlled kicks, a quick grasp of choreography and real performance energy — every one of them central to jazz. And even if you never set foot at an audition, that pizzazz and presence flows into whatever other style you go on to dance.

Is a jazz session a genuine workout? +

Properly, yes. The leaps, fan kicks and travelling runs keep your heart rate ticking over, and all the while the isolations and balances are stealthily building core strength and steadiness. An hour of jazz leaves you warmed through, honestly worked and grinning, without any of that grind-it-out gym feeling.

Can I arrange private or small-group jazz tuition? +

Certainly. One-to-one and small-group jazz coaching can be set up on request, whether you want to land your pirouettes, polish a routine or get audition-ready. Send us a message and we will build the sessions around exactly what you are after.
